How It Began
I met Drew in 2011 when I was going into 7th grade. He was student teaching that year at my school. He was quick to introduce himself to my friend and me. He quickly became one of my favorite teachers at school, helping me do videos for research projects that included a Pokémon video, a food truck video, and helped me with schoolwork in general. He was easily my favorite Teacher. I was happy to learn that he was coming back to teach for my 8th grade year. At my 8th-grade graduation, he was the teacher selected to speak about me. I was very happy about this.
Fast forward to 2018, we had not been in touch for a while. His dad saw my parents at the gym, and this led to Drew emailing me, saying let’s hang out sometime to catch up. After multiple emails back and forth we finally met up and went to eat. We had a lot to talk about like my high school experience, Overwatch League, and how I was making YouTube videos ranking the teams. I also explained my love of South Korea. We then started talking about what he was doing. He explained how he was working on his own company making all natural, organic lip and body balms with beeswax. I recalled from years ago that he had bees, but I never really knew what he did with them.
After more conversation about Drew’s Honeybees, it became clear that his company lacked influence on social media. I told him that I would be interested in helping him with social media, so we set a day and meet and discuss possibilities. We talked about everything from posting on Instagram to making YouTube videos. We kept meeting to discuss these things, brainstorming content for each platform. One day we set out to make YouTube videos, which meant visiting a hive. I wasn’t nervous about being around the bees. I’d been stung twice before, but bees have never scared me. I always knew that if you remain calm, you likely won’t get stung. Once we arrived at the apiary, I put on a beekeeping suit. When we began recording the bees were so calm I didn’t think I needed to wear the suit. The bees could care less that I was there observing and recording their work. On my next visit to the hive, I decided it wouldn’t be necessary for me to wear the bee suit.
As we record videos and meet to discuss social media, I realize that I’m very fortunate to be working for Drew’s Honeybees. I get to work with someone I know that trusts me and I’m very excited to see what comes next for Drew and Drew’s Honeybees. I’m honored to be a part of this company.
